Call Of Duty’s Ungodly Download Sizes Are Finally Getting Smaller

Discover how Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is tackling the franchise's notorious download sizes with new tech and community feedback, paving the way for more accessible gaming experiences.

Call Of Duty's Ungodly Download Sizes Are Finally Getting Smaller

The upcoming release of “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6” marks a significant shift in Activision’s strategy regarding game file sizes, a welcome change for players weary of the franchise’s traditionally massive downloads. This shift is driven by ongoing feedback from the gaming community and Activision’s own initiatives to optimize user experience.

Why the Change?

For years, “Call of Duty” games have been notorious for their massive file sizes, often surpassing 200GB, which not only consumed substantial storage space but also posed a barrier to downloading and updating games, especially for players with limited internet bandwidth. The push for smaller file sizes comes as Activision aims to make its games more accessible and user-friendly, acknowledging the community’s frustration with bloated installs.

What’s Changing?

Activision has implemented several strategies to reduce download sizes for “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.” Notably, the company plans to separate the free-to-play battle royale mode, Warzone, from the main game installations. This allows players who are not interested in Warzone to avoid downloading this significant portion of the game, which has previously contributed to the inflated file sizes.

Additionally, the publisher is optimizing how game assets are packaged and installed. By allowing players to selectively install different parts of the game, such as campaigns or multiplayer modes, the initial download size and subsequent updates can be significantly reduced.

Technical Innovations

Behind these changes are substantial technical innovations. Activision has been reworking the game’s core architecture to support modular downloads, which means that future updates will also likely be smaller, as only necessary components need to be updated. This modular approach not only benefits players with faster downloads and installations but also optimizes the overall performance of the game on various platforms.

Community and Beta Testing

Activision is not making these changes in isolation. The community’s feedback has been a crucial part of this process, influencing decisions on which aspects of the game can be made optional. Moreover, the upcoming open Beta for “Black Ops 6” is a significant part of this strategy, allowing players to experience these changes firsthand and provide further feedback before the final release. The Beta, starting on August 30, will also serve as a real-world test of the new downloading and installation systems.

As “Black Ops 6” nears its release on October 25, the gaming community is keenly watching to see how these promised reductions in file size will materialize. If successful, this could set a new standard for the series and possibly influence other game developers to adopt similar practices.
